Short Stories in the Spotlight
Posted by: Karen Kleckner Keefe

tenthWhen the NYT proclaims,  ”George Saunders Has Written the Best Book You’ll Read This Year,” readers take notice. When readers learn that Tenth of December is a collection of short stories, many of them say, “Oh.” You and I both know that what people self-report about reading short stories and what they actually check out are worlds apart. You might normally order 10 copies of a best-selling author’s new book, but when you see that it’s a collection? You cut the order down to two. It’s not right, it’s not fair. Short stories are like pieces of polished glass, blah, blah, blah. So, when one gets great buzz and spends several weeks on the bestseller list, literature lovers rejoice! And use this momentum to push those gems sitting forgotton on your shelves.
