Dusty Book: Grosse Pointe Girl: Tales from a Suburban Adolescence
Posted by: Rebecca Vnuk

Set in a wealthy Michigan suburb in the 1980s, Sarah Grace McCandless’ Grosse Pointe Girl: Tales from a Suburban Adolescence follows Emma from the summer before sixth grade to her high-school graduation. Emma goes through typical adolescent rites of passage, such as getting her first bra, being bullied by the popular girls, experiencing unrequited love, getting fake IDs, and adjusting to her parents’ separation.

Told as first-person episodic reflections, this is a quick and enjoyable read that will appeal to anyone who grew up in the era of Madonna and Michael Jackson – and will appeal to YA readers as well. The Booklist review:  “McCandless’ wickedly funny descriptions and her unerring ear for teen dialogue will appeal to any reader who remembers, or is surviving, the stomach-twisting anxiety of becoming an adult.”
