Dusty Book: The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen
Posted by: Karen Kleckner Keefe

correctionsIf eggnog’s not enough to numb you to your family’s forced togetherness this holiday season, enjoy a shot of schadenfreude courtesy of  Jonathan Franzen’s hefty The Corrections. Denise, Gary and Chip return to their childhood home to give their mother one last “normal” Christmas, in spite of their father’s escalating Parkinson’s disease and the adult siblings’ crumbling personal lives. This book is manic and deep and flip and thoughtful and arch and sincere and every messy, incongrous thing that makes up being part of a family. And, just like in real life, for all the complaining and whining and wishing for things to be different, there remains a stubborn, helpless love.
